Surety bonds help make sure projects get done. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service (BFS) handles surety bonds across the country. The BFS is part of the Department of the Treasury. Companies must apply to the BFS if they want to:
- Write federal bonds directly
- Reinsure federal bonds
- Be recognized as an Admitted Reinsurer for companies that write or reinsure federal bonds
- Write federal bonds directly
- Reinsure federal bonds
- Be recognized as an Admitted Reinsurer for companies that write or reinsure federal bonds
A free program with the City offers up to $500,000 to help with surety bond applications. Your business may be eligible if:
- Your business is bidding or planning to bid on a project as a contractor with a City agency or the NYC Economic Development Corporation
- The project needs surety bonding
Businesses can apply as prime contractors or subcontractors.
