If your business is from another state and wants to operate in New York, you might need a Certificate of Authority from the New York State Department of State (NYSDOS).
You should talk to an attorney to learn about business legal structures.
To get this certificate, you need to:
- Show proof that your business is registered in your home state or country.
 - Pay a fee.

Sometimes, you do not need a Certificate of Authority: If your business is already working in New York, you need permission from the State Tax Commission to apply for the Certificate. Call the Commission at 518-485-2639 to get permission.
Out-of-state not-for-profit businesses: If your not-for-profit business from another state wants to work in New York, you need to file the Application for Authority for Foreign Not-for-Profit Corporations.
